New Ramsar Sites 

Recently, the Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu; and Tawa Reservoir of Madhya Pradesh have been recognised as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu

  • It is located in Tarapur District of Tamil Nadu. 
  • It is a haven for avian(bird) biodiversity, especially for waterfowl habitats.

 

Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu

  • It is located in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu.
  • It provides essential habitats for various bird species including migratory birds. 
  • Tamil Nadu has the highest number of Ramsar sites in India with 18. 

 

Tawa Reservior, Madhya Pradesh

  • It is located in Narmadapuram, Madhya Pradesh. 
  • It is a man-made wetland which was created for irrigation purpose through the construction of Tawa Dam.
  • It is located within Satpura Tiger Reserve.
