National Geoscience Awards

Recently, the President of India presented the National Geoscience Awards to 21 geoscientists for the year 2023. 


Key Highlights
  • National Geoscience Awards are prestigious awards initiated by the Ministry of Mines, the Government of India to recognise extraordinary achievements and contributions in the field of geoscience. 
  • Originally, it was established as the National Mineral Awards in 1966, later it was renamed in 2009 as the National Geoscience Awards. 
  • Objective: To honour individual and team for extraordinary achievements and contributions in various fields of geosciences.
  • The Ministry of Mines conferred this award in 3 categories:
    1. National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement: Presented to houner an individual for a lifetime of significant contributions to the geosciences.
    2. National Young Geoscientist Award: Conferred to individuals or teams for notable work in the fields of earth sciences.
    3. National Geoscience Award: Awarded to an individual below 35 years of age, recognizing their promising contributions to the geosciences.
  • Eligibility: Any Indian citizen with outstanding contributions in any field of geosciences is eligible for this award. 
 
Nomination and Selection Process of National Geoscience Awards
  • Nominations for NGA can be made by individuals, team members, former awardees, or heads of institutions. 
  • Selection Process: The selection process primarily consists of 
    1. Scrutiny:  By Sectional Scrutiny Committees (SSC)
    2. Evaluation: By the Screening Committee of Experts (SCE)
    3. Final Recommendations: the Award Making Authority (AMA)
