Wular Lake 

Wular Lake is slowly choking up due to extensive siltation.


Key Highlights

  • It is located in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • It is the largest freshwater lake in India and 2nd largest in Asia after Lake Baikal.
  • It was formed by tectonic activity and fed by the Jhelum River. 
  • Zain Lank is a small island in the middle of the Wular Lake, built by King Zainul-Abi-Din (Known as ‘Akbar of Kashmir’).
  • Wular lake was designated as Ramsar site in 1990. 


Threats: Pollution, encroachment, and extensive siltation have reduced the lake’s size and affected ecological health.
