Vulture Count 2024

Recently, the World Wide Fund for Nature-India (WWF India) has launched an initiative to count vultures and raise awareness of the critically endangered species.

Key Highlights

• WWF India launched Vulture Count 2024 in collaboration with Bird Count India and eBird.
• It was launched on the International Vulture Awareness  Day.
• This initiative aims to systematically monitor and conserve the country’s rapidly declining vulture populations.

 

Importance of Vulture 

• Vultures play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. They prevent the spread of other diseases that could affect different livestock, wildlife and humans.
• They serve as nature’s clean-up crew by feeding on the infected carcass (infected dead bodies of animals) which kills the pathogens and breaks the chain of infections.
