GI tag to 8 Assam Products

Recently, the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai has granted GI tags to eight products from Assam, including traditional food items and rice beer varieties.


Key Highlights 

Traditionally fermented rice-based alcoholic beverages — 

  • Bodo Jou Gwran — the highest percentage of alcohol (about 16.11%) 
  • Maibra Jou Bidwi — served as a welcome drink by most Bodo tribes.
  • Bodo Jou Gishi — a traditional rice-based alcoholic beverage.

 

Traditional Dishes— 

  • Bodo Napham: Favourite dish of fermented fish. 
  • Bodo Ondla: A rice powder curry, 
  • Bodo Gwkha: Locally known as ‘Gwka Gwkhi’, and prepared during the Bwisagu festival. 
  • Bodo Narzi: a semi-fermented food prepared with jute leaves.
  • Bodo Aronai: a traditional shawl or scarf.
