Z-Morh Tunnel
The Prime Minister recently inaugurated the strategic Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir.
About Z-Morh tunnel
- It is a key project for creating a year-round strategic corridor between Kashmir and Ladakh.
- “Z-Morh” refers to the Z-shaped road section.
- Location: Ganderbal district of Kashmir
- The tunnel will enhance all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, the route to Leh, which was previously cut off in winter due to snow and avalanches.
- Important Features: It features an intelligent traffic management system to control traffic, and a dedicated escape tunnel to facilitate traffic.
Significance:
- The tunnel is part of a strategic route to Ladakh, ensures seamless connectivity between Gagangir and Sonamarg and will ease summer travel to Ladakh.
- Connectivity: The Z-Morh tunnel will connect to the Zojila tunnel, Asia’s longest, reducing travel time between Ganderbal and Kargil from 3 hours to 20 minutes.
- It is important for the movement of military resources to border areas.
