Samudrayaan Mission

The Samudrayaan Mission has been allocated Rs 600 crore in the Union Budget 2025-26.

Key Highlights 
  • It was launched in 2021, it is India’s first manned ocean mission to explore the deep ocean.
  • Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India
  • Developed by: National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT). 
Key Objectives 
  • To explore polymetallic nodules
  • To enhance India’s deep-sea research capabilities and develop underwater vehicles and robotics.
  • The focus also includes desalination and renewable energy. Countries like the U.S. and Japan have conducted successful deep-ocean crewed missions.
About NIOT
  • It is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and has developed a 6000m depth-rated Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) named ‘Matsya 6000’.
  • The mission aims to send three people to a depth of 6,000 meters in a submersible named the MATSYA 6000.
  • The submersible will have an operational capability of 12 hours, which can be extended to 96 hours in the case of an emergency.
