Jawaharlal Nehru Port

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India has recently launched multiple projects to expand capacity at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai.


Key Highlights 
  • It is also known as the Nhava Sheva Port 
  • Location: Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra 
  • It was commissioned in 1989.
  • This port is India’s first 100% landlord major port and largest container port, accounting for approximately 50% of the total containerized cargo volume across the major ports of the country.
  • The latest projects include a solar-powered boat, two indigenous tugs, and three fire tenders, improving the safety and efficiency of the port.
  • Ranking: It is ranked 26th among the top 100 container ports in the world.
  • Global connections: Connects to over 200 ports worldwide. 
  • Objective: To become India’s first port to handle 10 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units)  by 2027.
